For plumbing contractors
Plumbing Marketing, Websites & Automation
Plumbing has the shortest buying decision of any trade we work with. A homeowner standing in two inches of water is not comparing companies, reading reviews, or weighing value. They are calling numbers in the order Google put them in, and stopping at the first one that answers.
That makes the job simple to describe and hard to do: be in the results, answer the phone, and remember the customer afterwards. WebDevAuto handles all three, and the third one is where most plumbing businesses leave the most money.
Customer acquisition
How homeowners search for a plumber
Plumbing search is dominated by urgency, but the profitable work is in the searches that are not urgent at all.
- Active emergency. "Burst pipe", "emergency plumber near me", "water heater leaking". Usually voice search or a phone tap, frequently at night or on a weekend, and always calling rather than filling in a form.
- Blocked and unpleasant. "Drain cleaning near me", "toilet keeps backing up". Urgent but not catastrophic, and the homeowner will wait until morning if somebody tells them it is safe to.
- Failed appliance. "Water heater replacement cost", "tankless vs tank". A larger ticket with a day or two of research behind it.
- Planned work. Repipes, bathroom rough-ins, gas lines, and water treatment. Weeks of consideration, decided on trust and licensing.
- Commercial and property management. Recurring maintenance and after-hours contracts, bought on responsiveness rather than price.
- Second opinions. Someone has been quoted a repipe and is checking whether the number is sane. These convert well and are almost never chased.
The emergency searches are what most plumbing marketing is aimed at, and they are the least defensible: everyone bids for them and the winner is whoever answers. The durable advantage is on the other end of the list. A plumber who is remembered by the customer whose water heater they replaced four years ago does not have to win that auction again.
Customer journey
From the leak to the callback in four years
Six steps, and the plumbing-specific failure is that steps five and six almost never happen.
- 01
Search
Something is leaking, blocked, or has stopped producing hot water.
- 02
Website
A service page for that exact problem, in their area, loading fast on a phone.
- 03
Call
They call. Emergency plumbing customers overwhelmingly do not use forms.
- 04
Response
You answer, or the next result does. There is very little in between.
- 05
Job
You attend, fix it, and the customer is grateful and slightly poorer.
- 06
Next time
Four years later something else fails. Do they still have your number?
Most plumbing businesses treat step six as luck. It is not: it is a record and a reminder. The customer whose emergency you solved is the warmest lead you will ever have, and the industry loses them by default.
Platform solutions
What a plumbing company actually needs from a platform
Ordered by what moves money in a trade decided by who picks up.
AI Receptionist
In no other trade is answering the phone this close to the entire marketing strategy. An emergency caller works down the results list until somebody speaks to them, and a voicemail greeting is functionally the same as not being in the results at all.

Emergency plumbing is won in the map pack, in a specific suburb, in the middle of the night. Service-area pages and a complete profile are what get you into the three results a panicking homeowner actually sees.

The most under-exploited asset in plumbing is the customer list. One record per property, with what was done and when, is what turns a decade of one-off repairs into a base you can contact.

Water heaters, softeners, and sump pumps all have known lifespans. A reminder before the failure is worth more than an advert after it, and it goes to someone who already trusts you.

A slow site is a lost emergency call. Tap-to-call above the fold, a page for each service, and a page for each area you cover, all built to load in about two seconds on a phone.

Plumbing owners chronically underestimate how many calls they miss, because a missed call leaves no evidence. Counting them is usually the moment the problem becomes real.

Use cases
Four situations every plumbing business recognises
What the platform does in each, without anybody being asked to remember something.
Sunday night, water everywhere
- What happens
- A supply line lets go at 11pm on a Sunday. The homeowner calls four plumbers. Three go to voicemail.
- What the system does
- The receptionist answers, establishes whether the water is shut off, talks them through the stop tap if it is not, takes the address, and books the first available slot.
- What you end up with
- You are the one company that answered, which in this trade is very close to being the one company that gets hired.
The drain call during a job
- What happens
- You are under a sink with both hands occupied. Three calls come in over ninety minutes. None of them leave a message.
- What the system does
- Each is answered, qualified, and booked into a slot, and lands in the CRM as a lead with the address and the problem.
- What you end up with
- The afternoon fills itself while you are working, instead of you finding three missed calls and no way to return them.
The water heater you installed in 2021
- What happens
- It is coming up on the end of its life. The homeowner will search for a plumber when it fails, and there is no particular reason it will be you.
- What the system does
- The install is on the property record with its date, so the properties entering their replacement window are a filter away. You send that group an inspection offer when you want the work, instead of waiting for the 2am call.
- What you end up with
- You get the replacement as a booked job at a time you chose, rather than competing for it as an emergency at 2am.
The repipe second opinion
- What happens
- Someone has been quoted a large number by another company and calls to sanity-check it. You quote, and never hear back.
- What the system does
- The quote sits at a visible stage with follow-up scheduled, and the sequence stops the moment they reply.
- What you end up with
- High-ticket quotes get a second and third contact rather than being abandoned after the first conversation.
How the system is set up for this trade
The four parts that do the most work for plumbing businesses
Local SEO puts you in front of the search. The receptionist answers what it produces. The CRM holds it. Automation chases it. Each links to the full product page.
Local SEO
Be in the three results a flooding homeowner sees
Emergency plumbing searches produce a map pack and very little patience for anything below it. Getting into that pack is geographic, specific, and mostly a matter of doing unremarkable work consistently.
- A service page for each thing you sell: emergency repair, drain cleaning, water heaters, repipes, gas lines, and water treatment.
- A service-area page for each place you genuinely cover, with real detail about that area rather than a substituted city name.
- A Google Business Profile with correct categories, a real service list, and hours that reflect how after-hours calls are actually handled.
- Review requests after every job, because an emergency searcher checks reviews in the ten seconds before dialling.
- Consistent name, address, and phone details everywhere they appear.
AI Receptionist
In plumbing, answering is most of the strategy
This trade has the least forgiving caller in the home services set. They are standing in water, they have four numbers, and the ranking of those numbers matters far less than which one speaks to a human-sounding voice first.
- Answers on the first ring at any hour, including the nights and weekends emergency plumbing actually happens on.
- Asks what a plumbing call needs: the address, what is leaking, whether the water is shut off, and whether it is affecting more than one fixture.
- Gives immediate safety guidance you have approved, such as where the stop tap usually is, rather than leaving someone to panic while they wait.
- Texts a booking link and writes the call into the CRM with a transcript.
- Escalates a genuine emergency to a real person according to rules you set.
CRM
The customer list is the asset nobody in plumbing uses
A plumbing business ten years old has served thousands of properties and can usually contact almost none of them. The work is on paper, in a phone, or in an invoicing tool that was never meant to be a customer list.
- One record per property with every visit, what was fitted, and when.
- A pipeline that fits the trade: new call, booked, attended, quoted, scheduled, complete.
- Equipment ages visible, so a water heater approaching end of life is something you can act on rather than something you find out about at midnight.
- Source kept on every lead, so you can see what the map pack is actually producing.
Marketing Automation
Get the next job before it becomes an emergency
Almost everything a plumber installs has a predictable service life. That makes plumbing one of the few trades where a reminder is genuinely useful to the customer rather than an interruption.
- A text back the instant a call is missed, which in emergency plumbing is the highest-value automation on this list.
- An immediate reply to every form, so a non-urgent enquiry is not left until the end of a long day.
- Installed equipment recorded with its date, so the households approaching the end of a water heater life are a list you can filter and send to, rather than something you would have to remember.
- Follow-up on open quotes for repipes and larger work, stopping as soon as the customer replies.
- A review request after each job, while the relief is still fresh.
Plumbing marketing questions, answered
- Can the AI receptionist tell a real emergency from a blocked sink?
- It triages on rules you set. No water in the house on a Saturday night is not the same call as a slow drain, and you decide where the line sits and what happens on either side of it. What it will not do is diagnose a fault down the phone.
- Will it tell a customer to turn off their water?
- Only if you have approved that guidance. Simple, safe instructions like locating the stop tap are worth giving because they reduce the damage before you arrive. Anything beyond that is left for the person who is actually going to look at it.
- We do mostly commercial and property-management work. Does this still fit?
- The parts that matter shift rather than disappear. Property managers buy on responsiveness, so the receptionist and the follow-up still carry the weight, while the emergency-focused local SEO matters less than a site that makes your contract terms and after-hours cover clear.
- How do you get our old customers back into a contactable list?
- We import what you have and are honest about its condition. Invoicing exports usually contain enough to build a property record; a decade of paper does not, and we will say so rather than promise a list we cannot construct.
- Is this worth it for a one-van operation?
- One van is the case where answering matters most, because there is nobody else to pick up. The receptionist and missed-call text-back are usually the whole of the first phase for an owner-operator, and the rest can wait until there is a second van.
