SEO TAKEOVER
A retainer rents you a few keywords.
A takeover rebuilds the whole footprint.
Below is one property, measured over its first 100 days, straight out of Google Search Console. It is the property behind Mechai, an app WebDevAuto built and runs. Every figure on this page is real, including the two that went the wrong way.
TAKEOVERS WORK BEST FOR BUSINESSES WITH
- Multiple services, markets, products or problems people search for
- Significant long tail search demand
- The capacity to service the demand an expanded footprint brings
- A website we can safely control and publish to

100 days, measured against the 100 before it
Search Console, sc-domain:mechai.app, finalized data. The growth window is 30 May to 4 September 2026. The comparison window is the 98 days immediately before it.
| Metric | The 98 days before | The 100 days after |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | 245,776 | 2,357,602 |
| Clicks | 15,997 | 36,631 |
| Queries ranking anywhere | 1,587 | 51,593 |
| Queries in the top 10 | 1,101 | 33,432 |
| Queries in the top 3 | 523 | 14,644 |
| Queries at position 1 | 258 | 4,398 |
2,057 individual pages earned impressions in the window. For this analysis we classify a query as position one when its Search Console average position is below 1.5. 4,363 of the 4,398 position one queries were non branded. That is the more meaningful number: ranking first for searches from people who were not already looking for Mechai is net new search visibility.
The curve, month by month
A takeover does not land all at once. The pages publish, Google works through them, and the footprint compounds.
June
161,009
impressions
6,813
clicks
July
851,505
impressions
12,656
clicks
August
1,162,143
impressions
14,547
clicks
Impressions went up more than seven times between the first full month and the third. Clicks slightly more than doubled over the same stretch. The gap between those two rates is the honest part, and it is the next section.
The two numbers that got worse
Any agency can show you the chart that goes up. Here is the rest of it.
AVERAGE POSITION
4.8 to 7.9
CLICK THROUGH RATE
6.5% to 1.6%
Both of those are averages, and both got dragged down by the same thing that made the campaign work. The property started with a small, sharp core of 1,587 queries it ranked well for. It finished with 51,593. The 50,000 queries it added rank lower and get clicked less than the original core did, so the average of everything fell even though the total went up.
The number that pays the bills is clicks, and clicks went from 15,997 to 36,631. If you are shown a takeover case study where average position improves while the footprint grows tenfold, ask to see the query count. The two do not usually happen together.
What the footprint actually holds
A sample of non branded queries the property ranks for, with its average position in the window.
What a takeover actually is
Four things that separate it from the monthly retainer you have probably already tried.
SCOPE
The whole footprint, not a keyword list
Most retainers prioritize a limited set of pages and search terms month after month. A takeover maps the entire addressable footprint first, then builds against it as one coordinated campaign. That is the difference between 1,587 ranking queries and 51,593.
SPEED
One campaign, not an open ended engagement
A takeover has a start, a scope, and an end. The work lands in a defined window instead of trickling out across a subscription you forget you are paying for.
CONTROL
We hold the site, not just a login
Publishing at this volume means we need real control of the property, not a seat in someone else’s CMS. That is the first thing we scope, and for some sites it is the reason the answer is no.
EVIDENCE
Every page has to earn its place
A takeover is not a few thousand near identical pages with the city name swapped. That is how a property gets buried rather than built. The number you are quoted is the count of genuinely distinct opportunities we can find, not a page target we pad out to hit.
How an SEO takeover works
Five stages. The third is the one people picture when they hear the word, and it is the one that matters least on its own.
- 01
Map the market
We analyse your services, locations, buyers, existing rankings and the questions people search throughout the buying process, so the campaign is scoped against real demand rather than a page count someone picked.
- 02
Find qualified page opportunities
Every proposed page has to represent a genuinely different search intent. Opportunities that overlap each other, duplicate content the site already has, or describe something the business cannot actually deliver do not make it into the build.
- 03
Build the footprint
Qualified pages are produced, internally connected and technically validated, then released in controlled publishing waves rather than dumped into the sitemap in one go.
- 04
Let Google work through it
The pages enter your sitemap and Google begins discovering, crawling and evaluating the expanded footprint. This is the part nobody can shortcut, and it is why the curve on this page climbs across months rather than days.
- 05
Measure what survives
Search Console shows which pages and queries actually start producing impressions, rankings and clicks. The footprint is then strengthened around whatever Google responded to, which is a different list from the one anyone predicted at the start.
An SEO takeover combines semantic SEO, programmatic SEO and AI assisted content production with human defined business facts and technical publishing controls. The automation is what makes large scale SEO possible. It does not remove the qualification, validation and measurement that keep thousands of pages from becoming thousands of liabilities.
When the answer is no
A takeover is the wrong tool if your business serves one small area with a handful of services, because there is no long tail to go and take. It is also wrong if we cannot get real control of the site, or if nobody on your side can handle the volume of enquiries a larger footprint brings. We would rather tell you that while it is still a conversation than after it is a campaign.
Questions people ask before they commit
How long does an SEO takeover take to show results?
Publishing is only the beginning. Google has to discover, crawl, evaluate and begin testing each page in search. On the Mechai property the footprint grew progressively across the first 100 days rather than appearing at once: June produced 161,009 impressions, July 851,505, and August 1,162,143. Results vary with the authority of the domain, the competition, the existing site structure and how many qualified opportunities actually exist.
Why did the average position get worse?
Because the search footprint became dramatically larger. Mechai went from ranking for 1,587 queries to 51,593. New queries generally enter Google at lower positions before they mature, which pulled the overall average from 4.8 to 7.9 even as total clicks rose from 15,997 to 36,631. A rising average position on a footprint that grew tenfold is the number that should make you suspicious, not this one.
Is an SEO takeover different from monthly SEO?
Yes. Monthly SEO continuously maintains and improves the search presence a site already has, publishing a set number of pages against an ongoing plan. A takeover is a defined expansion campaign that maps and builds a much larger search footprint in a concentrated period. You can use either on its own, and most properties want a takeover first and ongoing SEO afterwards to keep improving the footprint it produced.
Can you run a takeover on a website WebDevAuto did not build?
Potentially, but we need sufficient control of the publishing infrastructure. Large scale publishing, internal linking, canonicalization, structured data, sitemap management and technical validation cannot be performed safely through every third party website platform. We evaluate the existing site before approving a takeover, and this is the most common reason the answer is no.
Find out whether your site can carry one.
Tell us the domain. We will pull what it ranks for today, tell you how much of the footprint is actually available, and say plainly if a takeover is the wrong move.
